Funding Guidelines

Coastal Community Funding Programs

Coastal Community will only make one contribution per organization per budget year, unless special circumstances can be demonstrated.  This includes financial or in-kind support through the Branch Investment program, Corporate Sponsorships or the Building Healthier Communities Fund.

  1. Coastal Community will accept applications from organizations that meet the following criteria:
    • Registered charities and recognized community not-for-profit groups that provide service in the areas of: arts and culture, community service, economic development, education, environment, health, sports and recreation, or youth.
    • Serve the communities reflecting Coastal Community’s trade area.  Presently this trade area encompasses the communities of Victoria, Duncan, Chemainus, Nanaimo, Gabriola, Nanoose, Parksville, Qualicum, Port Alberni, Ucluelet, Tofino, the Comox Valley, Campbell River,  Cortes Island, Quadra Island, Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Sointula and Alert Bay, as well as nearby communities.
    • Amateur Sports Organizations (Coastal Community will consider requests from sports associations and sports leagues, however, sports teams will not be considered through our Branch Investment program).
    • Start-up funding for granting foundations.
  1. Coastal Community does not support the following:
    • Partisan political or religious organizations and affiliated activities.
    • Groups that are not a registered charity or recognized as community not-for-profit.
    • Requests where our support would cover travel costs.
    • Groups that represent a conflict of interest for Coastal Community or that promote specific programs or issues where members of the Credit Union and clients of its subsidiaries may have significantly divergent views.
    • Requests from organizations that do not provide a direct benefit to the identified communities served by the Credit Union, and its subsidiaries.
    • Individual pursuits or interests that are primarily for personal gain.
    • Requests for funds to support operational costs or debt servicing (operational costs refer to fixed costs including but not limited to: rent, wages, and utilities.)
    • Requests by granting foundations other than for start-up costs.
  1. On occasion, Coastal Community does offer support to groups or projects outside Coastal Community’s trade area.  Support in this area is at the sole discretion of the Board of Directors.  This category of support falls outside of the funding allocated to support community and in general is targeted to support people affected by catastrophic events.
  1. Coastal Community reserves the right to consider all decisions for support as final.  Any requests that may be declined by the Credit Union will be vetted to ensure alignment with policy and community need.   From time to time, Coastal Community may provide support, under special circumstances, to groups that may fall outside the policy.
